STEP BY STEP MATTES IN CINEMA 4D
01 CREATE A CRYPTOMATTE IN YOUR SCENE
Use the RS AOV (Render>rs AOV Manager) window in a Redshift-enabled scene and then drag the Cryptomatte into the middle panel. You’ll find Cryptomattes will work best if they’re set to use the Direct saving option rather than the more traditional Multi-pass system. By default, Direct files will be saved in the exact same location as the Regular Image from the Render settings.
02 DEFINE THE CRYPTOMATTE
Cryptomattes can be set to use the Object Name, Material Name, RS Object IDS or a user-defined attribute within the ID Type dropdown menu. Both Object Name and Material Name capture all the relevant elements in the scene. There can be more than one Cryptomatte used in a scene, so if you employ two of them, one can capture all the objects, and the other all of the materials.
03 USING PUZZLE MATTES
Puzzle Mattes can be set to use either Object or Material IDS. In this scene, a Redshift Render tag has been attached to the two objects for the words and the backdrop. To Assign an Object ID, go to the Object ID tab in the Attributes and then choose the desired ID. More than one Puzzle Matte can be used here too, making sure to set the Object IDS higher, for example to 4, 5 and 6.
04 REFRACTION AND REFLECTION CONTROL
Puzzle Mattes can either enable or disable refraction and reflection. This gives you the option to create a Puzzle Matte that enables the transparency for sophisticated matte control and another that doesn’t have a refraction and reflection checkbox marked to create a simple shape, as seen here. This option isn’t available with a Cryptomatte, making Puzzle Mattes better suited in some scenes.
