STEP BY STEP CREATE LAYERS IN NOMAD SCULPT

01 MODEL IN PARTS

In this example I'm going to use a little anthropomorphised virus model. It has a few separate parts including a body, teeth and eyes. Each model can have its own separate Layers to control, but as you can’t control all the parts in one go it takes some planning. The bulk of the Layers will be on the body model. Initially we’ll just focus on the shapes.

02 MAKE THE FEATURES

The reason we want the parts all separated is simple: if we pose the lips from open to a smile or a frown, they also need to wrap around the teeth. If the teeth were in the same model it wouldn't work correctly. So, it’s best to model and paint elements like teeth in a completely separate part of the model and keep them that way. You can merge them, but it will cause issues.

03 CREATE A LAYER

Layers are found at the top of the menu on the right. Open up the Layer panel and add a new one, making sure you have the correct body part selected before you do. Once that’s created, you can go ahead and move parts to the new shape. Here we just used the Move brush to make him smile a little. Name it “Smile” in the dropdown menu, and follow that system for all your Layers.

04 ADDITIONAL LAYERS

Now add a new Layer and name it “Eyes closed”. Using the Move tool, drag the upper eyelids down and lower eyelids up a tiny bit. You can use the Masking option from the side menus if you want to be more accurate. Only move the eyelids here or you may have issues later on. If you accidentally move anything else it’ll move when you use the slider.
