4 x 4 Australia

30 YEARS AGO – MAY 1992

-

OUR 100th issue hit the streets while Moonie took a break and headed to Africa for three months, leaving the mag in the capable hands of Paul Harrington and Sharyn Vanderhorst. Also that month, we gave away the 80 Series Cruiser we'd been building to a lucky reader in Newcastle.

The new V6 petrol Jackaroo was on the front cover and was a major story, as was the comparison between a turbo-diesel Sahara and a V8 Range Rover.

Moonie might have been in Africa but he wrote a yarn on his travels to Kangaroo Island, still one of his favourite places in Australia. Other travel yarns included Gorman’s Gap in Queensland and Tallangalook in Victoria.

Tag-along tours were big business back in the early ’90s and we ran a guide to the many operators who were taking people to all the farflung places in Australia.

Michael Richardson, founding editor of our major opposition back then, Overlander mag, had joined us as a contributor, producing brain teaser travel crosswords for us. He was ideally suited for the role.
