4 x 4 Australia

20 YEARS AGO JULY 2002

-

WITH another 180-page issue and the readers’ prospects of winning 30 grand worth of ARB gear, the magazine was setting the pace in the 4WD field.

With a fabulous outback cover photo, the magazine featured a great article on the Gawler Ranges by the late, great Paul Cockburn, which was backed up by some truly stunning photography by Split Image. If this couldn’t make you want to go, then nothing could!

Vehicle-wise there was a major comparison of the middle-weight turbo diesels then available in Australia, which included the Holden Monterey, the Disco, the ML Mercedes, Pajero and the Prado, the latter being the chosen one if you were looking for a great bush tourer – a badge it still wears today in the mid-size line-up.

Moonie rolled around Moab with the winners of the Outback Challenge, all joining the annual Easter Jeep Safari and enjoying some of the best four wheelin’ on the planet. If you ever get a chance to go … do it!
