5FAST FACTS
01 WHERE
The Rufus River drive is between Wentworth in farwestern NSW across to Renmark in South Australia. Covering a total of 170km, it can be done as quick or as long as you like, but take the time to explore the area’s rich history.
02 WHAT TO SEE
Plenty of Australian history and stunning landscapes to check out along the way. The main feature is the river system that connects each town. There are plenty of old steamers (both paddle and barges) to check out, explorer relics, and significant Aboriginal artefacts and history. Explore the heritage buildings in both towns, and be amazed at Lake Victoria by its sheer size and the ancient Indigenous stories of the lake.
03 WHERE TO STAY
The Murray River is known for the multitude of free camps along its length. If you’re not set-up for free camping there are caravan parks in both Wentworth and Renmark.
04 RENMARK HOTEL
Special mention must go to the stunning Renmark Hotel on Murray Avenue, which was established in 1897 as the first community-owned hotel in the British Commonwealth and remains in community hands today. The pub has undergone several renovations over the years and today impresses as a three-story edifice in an Art Deco style. Features include accommodation, a bar (once the longest in the Southern Hemisphere), bottle-o, dining, entertainment, function centre, restaurant and its own museum.
