10 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 2012

IT might have been just the lead-in news story, but the then all-new Y62 Patrol was also on the front cover of this issue of the mag, which at that time was under the stewardship of Marcus Craft. Probably more popular now than it has ever been; although it doesn’t rate in the Top 10 4WDS sold, it came as a bit of a surprise to me that the Y62 was 10 years old and is still essentially the same.

In celebration of the first vehicle crossing of the Simpson Desert, Doug and Marg Sprigg (of Arkaroola fame) recount their latest crossing of the desert and reflected on the initial jaunt 50 years previously in a G60 Patrol.

Looking at the equipment side of things, the mag had an exhaustive guide to off-road rubber with some great advice on how to stay legal, and how to get the most out of your expensive tyres.

Travel wise, this issue had stories from not only the Simpson but also Mount Kaputar NP (NSW), Vaughan Springs (Vic) and Byfield NP (Qld), while Moonie was swanning around the Wild West of the USA.
