As Monash University’s partnership with the bus industry starts to bear fruit, we sat down with ‘future bus’ design student Sarah Roberts to discuss her findings thus far. Uni research into bus rapid transit systems is set to gain pace with renewed financial backing for the bus and coach industry. We spoke to Roberts, whose PhD in industrial design is being sponsored by Transdev Melbourne and Monash University. While the PhD won’t be complete until 2019, her investigation into how the physical design of buses currently used in Melbourne might not be the most conducive to attracting new users is gaining momentum.

Land will be secured between Auckland’s CBD and airport for the creation of a bus priority lane, with a view to converting this into a tram line over the next few decades. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and Auckland Transport Boards will work together with Auckland Council to determine an integrated approach that enables a progression from the current bus services and bus lanes to improved bus services in the short term.
