SEPTEMBER ISSUE 361
We sat down for a chat with Whitmores Bus Lines director Jamie Whitmore about his purchase of Castlemaine Bus Lines, a 20-bus operation in regional Victoria. We spoke about what this means for him, his team, and the plans he has to boost services in the area. Predominantly a school bus operator, Whitmores is a Central Victorian-based third-generation family business which also has route services that connect residents with their local train stations and main shopping areas. Situated in Boort, Whitmores Bus Lines is owned and operated by the Whitmore family and grew from small beginnings in the 1950s with a school bus contract.
Scania Australia managing director Mikael Jansson will steer the organisation through a period of impending legislation and testing of emerging autonomous bus technology. Autonomous buses are ready to roll but the manufacturers are waiting on governments to flick on the green light. He says the adoption of autonomy for heavy vehicles, especially buses, will be dependent on legislation, both in Europe and in other markets around the world.
