In one of the more remarkable career turnarounds, Paine went from almost out of the game in early 2017 to Test captain after the events of the ball-tampering scandal last March. It’s a difficult spot for the 46th man to hold the top job in the Australian side, and only the fourth wicket-keeper. But having overcome a history of finger injuries, Paine has long been admired for the resilience he has shown, a quality that should serve him well in his new role.
