Sharma is now the senior figure of India’s pacemen, 11 years after his breakout moment when, as a teenager, he absolutely flummoxed Ricky Ponting with a torrid spell in Perth. It can be thankless work, bowling fast in Indian conditions, and Sharma has often come into his own only when India goes on the road – in seven away Tests in 2018, he claimed 26 wickets. With his bounce and length, Sharma will be needed in Australia.
