Once Sri Lanka’s youngest skipper, Mathews remains the veteran presence in the side since he gave up the captaincy of all three forms in mid-2017 (he was reappointed in the ODI role, then relieved again). He recently surpassed the benchmark of 5000 Test runs, something he achieved with an unusually low number of centuries, eight – his predecessor as Lankan leader, Arjuna Ranatunga, made only four among his 5105 career runs.
