Result in 2018: First round

Best finish: First round (2014, ’16, ’18) ICC ranking: 9th

Form line: The Tigresses entered the 2018 tournament in the Caribbean having shocked the competition in the Asian Cup five months before, becoming the first nation other than India to lift that trophy, and beating the Indians twice along the way. They were held up as the great upset chance of the Worlds, but results didn’t match up, with four heavy defeats. Bangladesh did win the 2020 qualifiers in Scotland last September, sweeping all five matches.

What previous tournaments tell us:

This will be the fourth World T20 in a row for Bangladesh, who played in their first as hosts in 2014. They return a core group, led by captain Salma Khatun, that has plenty of experience in the tournament, if not the desired level of success – since beating Sri Lanka in their last match in ’14, the Bangladeshis haven’t won a game in the two tournaments since.

Player to watch: Leg-spinning allrounder Rumana Ahmed will be long remembered in Bangladesh cricket for her player-of-the-match performance in the Asian Cup final. Bangladesh’s ODI captain missed the World T20 Qualifiers with a knee injury, but returned in fine form for the October series in Pakistan, making her first T20I half-century.

Expectations: Once again, they’ll hope to spring a surprise with the unpredictable ways of the 20-over format. Their bowlers proved capable of restricting runs two years ago, but their own line-up lacked the power to post big totals. Bangladesh recently made their record T20I total against Pakistan in Lahore, with 152 – but still lost that match.
