SOUTH AFRICA
Tournaments: 6 Result in 2018: First round Best finish: Semi-final (2014) ICC ranking: 6th
Form line: Since the 2018 edition of the tournament, things have been inconsistent for the South African squad. Despite recent competitive showings against the likes of Bangladesh and Pakistan, a series whitewash at the hands of India last month exposed significant problems against the turning ball. The team will rely heavily on its big hitters to be in with a chance of progressing deep into the tournament.
What past tournaments tell us: In a wonderful case of synchronicity, the Proteas women haven’t been able to crack on past the semifinals of the World Cup, going closest in
Bangladesh in 2014, but failing to pass the group stage in the Caribbean two years ago. While they’ve no doubt grown as a squad since then, it’s hard to see them pipping fellow group opponents England, with a shoot-out against Pakistan for a spot in the top-four the most likely path forward.
Player to watch: Constantly compared to Australia’s Ellyse Perry as the best all-rounder in the game, Marizanne Kapp will be a key figure in South African plans with both bat and ball. WIth the Proteas tending to perform strongly in either batting or bowling, with little crossover between them per game, the experience of Kapp will be crucial for South African hopes.
Expectations: While the squad has the potential to push the limits against weaker group opponents West Indies and Thailand, it seems like the game against Pakistan will eventuate for second place, with England positioned nicely to top the group. It’ll either be dazzling or a disaster – but a spectacle either way.
