Winter care for homeless at Shalom a true team effort

Albany Advertiser - - OPINION - Gerry van der Wal Shalom House co-ordinator

Shalom Crisis Accommodation for homeless men in Albany will be closing its doors for night-time accommodation on October 13.

This past winter we have provided accommodation to 40 separate clients whose stay with us ranged from a day to several weeks. Most of the night supervisors do this in a voluntary capacity from 5:30pm until 8am. This is truly appreciated as they give up their comfortable bed at home to supervise and keep the peace with a group of men who can sometimes present them with confronting situations. A big vote of thanks also goes to the contributors of food and clothing.

We will still be open as a drop-in centre all year on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10am-2pm for an empathetic ear, referrals to local service providers, laundry and shower facilities, clothes and a meal. So drop in for a chat.
