Builder earns praise for community contribution

Albany Advertiser - - NEWS - Tim Edmunds

Without a nomination in the Master Builders Association Great Southern Building Excellence Awards, Michael Stephen had no idea why he was being called to the awards night.

After weeks of helping build ramps for the Southern MTB Jump Comp in the town square, Mr Stephen was eager to see the fruits of the labour in action on Saturday night.

Little did he know he was about to be recognised for his efforts in contributing to the community through construction when he was presented with the prestigious Harold Smith Award on Saturday night.

The award — in recognition of the late former Albany mayor and architect Harold Smith, who was instrumental in the construction of schools and government buildings in Albany — was awarded to Mr Stephen for the first time in eight years.

Through his business MCB Construction, the 31-year-old’s support of many sporting and community groups through either sponsorship or in-kind support led to the rare recognition in the Great Southern construction industry. Mr Stephen, who established MCB Construction a decade ago, said he was humbled to receive the award, which was presented for only the sixth time since 2002.

“Honestly, I was overwhelmed and extremely privileged and proud to be receiving an award like this considering the last time it was awarded was eight years ago,” he said.

“We are privileged and lucky enough at MCB Construction to be in the situation where we are able to provide support. We support over 30 groups and clubs in Albany and the Great Southern.”

Mr Stephen said part of his philosophy when he started the business 10 years ago was not only to support clubs and groups he was interested in, but also what his staff showed passion towards. “I obviously try and support all my staff, young and old, male and female, to be involved in any sporting groups locally for the fact it keeps their mind and health in the best possible way,” he said.

“The more they are involved, the better it is for the community.

“I encourage more local businesses to do that because it supports the community and all the clubs and groups.”

MCB Construction has provided support through equipment, labour, transport and financial backing to well-known projects and events including the Southern MTB and the Princess Royal Sailing Club’s Sailability and Fishability projects, which enables people with all abilities to participate in and enjoy the recreational activities.
