Matches to mark NAIDOC Week

Spencer Park and Mt Lock­yer pri­mary schools faced off for their tra­di­tional NAIDOC Week foot­ball and net­ball game this week.

This is the 12th con­sec­u­tive year for the fix­tures, with the net­ball teams com­pet­ing for a per­pet­ual shield and the foot­ballers bat­tling it out for a framed Clare­mont Foot­ball jumper. A large crowd sup­ported the matches, which were both played in high spir­its.

In foot­ball, Mt Lock­yer won a closely con­tested game with a fi­nal score of 6.4 (40) to 5.3 (33).

The game was um­pired by North Al­bany Se­nior High School Foot­ball Academy teach­ers Peter Wat­ters and Tom Dimer,

In net­ball, Mt Lock­yer pre­vailed with a 17 goal to 7 vic­tory af­ter scores were locked to­gether at 7-7 at one stage.

Be­fore the games, stu­dents from NASHS par­tic­i­pat­ing in the Sis­ters Stand Tall Pro­gram opened pro­ceed­ings with a song to cel­e­brate NAIDOC Week, suited to this

year’s theme, Be­cause of Her, We Can. The Clare­mont foot­ball jumper was worn in the WAFL match dur­ing a pre­vi­ous indige­nous round be­tween Clare­mont and South Fre­man­tle.
