The Shire of Plantagenet revealed in a special meeting on Tuesday the 2018-19 financial budget would include a 1.5 per cent rates rise.

The 2018-19 budget included the imposition of a new waste rate, which is equivalent to an additional 2.57 per cent increase in rates.

Under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2007, all ratepayers will be charged a minimum rate of $50 per rate assessment.

It includes major items such as the continued refurbishment of the Frost Park pavilion, the demolition of Kamballup Hall and the new concrete floor at Mt Barker Tennis Club.

Cr Ken Clements voted against the budget with concerns there was no economic development and no move to lower debt.

“History shows that local governments that constantly remain low will have to raise rates at some point,” he said.

Cr Sue Etherington shared Cr Clements’ concerns and said for the first year there were no shovel-ready projects in the budget.
