Mt Barker give Grammar a fright

Albany Extra - - Sport -

Mt Barker did everything they could to ruin the perfect league record of Grammar Blue in the Albany Junior Soccer Association under-12s competition last Saturday.

Grammar Blue made the journey to Sounness Park where initially the home advantage looked as though it was going to assist Mt Barker when they led 2-0.

Goals from Lucas Vulcan and William McNamara put Mt Barker up but it was a case of two halves and it did not take long for Grammar to get one back before Sam Jeffery scored an equaliser.

By the end, there was only going to be one winner and that eventually came via a Clyde Fernandes strike as Grammar finished 3-2 winners.

Once Bethel found their groove against ACC the result was never in doubt.

They had a bit of a disjointed first half and ACC were rallying against their more fancied opposition and had done well to keep the score to 2-1 at the break.

Bethel found their form in the second half and eventually romped home 8-1.

The result has put them in the box seat to clinch second place in the league.

Third placed Mount Locker ensured they kept the pressure on Bethel after they thrashed Albany United 12-1.

Denmark beat St Joesphs Thunder 9-0 and Albany Glory had a battle against Yakamia but eventually proved to strong, winning 5-2.

The top two sides met each other in the under-13s competition when Albany-Bayswater played Polonia White. Polonia were thrashed by Bayswater earlier in the season 6-1, but have improves as the season has progressed.

They thought that they had taken the lead at the end of the first half but the goal was ruled out after the scorer was well offside when he poked the ball home for Polonia White.

The disallowed goal could have affected their morale but it seemed to do the opposite and in the second half Polonia deservedly took the lead through Lachlan Tindale.

They weren’t without their chances to further their lead but they were unable to and that allowed Bayswater to claw their way back into the game as Escher Nash found the equaliser.

Should both sides navigate their semifinal opponents Polonia White will fancy themselves for some silverware before the season is out.

Grammar played out a goalless draw against Rovers and Stirling Rangers beat Denmark 5-0 in the other under-13 games.
