Email scam warning

Albany Extra - - News - Jessica Cuthbert

Businesses are being warned of a scam circulating in which in one case a business has lost $6000.

Reports have been made of businesses who have had scammers hacking into their databases and sending invoices out to consumers asking for payments.

In one case, a consumer paid out $6000 to a scammer thinking the money was being paid to the business.

Consumer Protection officer Iris Thomas said the hacker gained access to a business’ email account or in some cases they would “spoof” a business’ email so their emails appeared to come from the company concerned.
