Eco snow dome
ALPINE enthusiasts looking for a new outdoor adventure this winter should join Alpine Nature Experience for an overnight snow dome adventure at Mount Hotham.
This is glamping in style, where you can either cross country ski or snowshoe to the remote site and then relax under the stars in the eco village snow domes. The company describes their new accommodation as, “Think of it as an Igloo, but dry, with a view, warmer and with a comfortable bed and plush blanket.”
In what is a first for the Australian alpine, the eco-village is set up in the wilderness near Hotham and completely off the grid, with everything carried in and out via man power.
Guests must first book for the sunset ‘snowshoe to fondue’ tour where they walk through the snow gum alpine environment to reach the camp. On arrival you are greeted with warm Glühwein by the fire.
Once inside the main tepee you will taste the delicacies of a three-course dinner, with mouth-watering French fondue and cheese imported for the occasion from French alpine farms.
If you are only undertaking the fondue dinner tour you will walk back via torchlight to the carpark once the evening is finished.
For overnight guests they have the pleasure of sleeping under the stars, as the snowdomes have a skylight roof, so you can admire the Southern Cross and other star constellations as you indulge in the remote alpine serenity.
As an addition guests can add on extra portions to their trip such as skidoo tours of Hotham the following morning or relax in a Dinner Plain Onsen.
The idea came from Frenchman JeanFrancois Rupp who relocated to Australia in 2014. Jean-Francois hopes to attract first timers to the snow, families, seminars and school groups.
“For me the snow is about much more than skiing, it’s about the beauty of the scenery, the food, and surrounding yourself in nature” he said.
Tours run from Wednesday to Sunday from 4.30pm in June and July and 5.00pm in August and September. You can find all details and book at www.alpinenatureexperience.com.au.
