Local support for young athletes
KIEWA Valley Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy and the Mt Beauty Medical Centre recently awarded the sixth annual KVSSP/MBMC Young Athlete and Performer Sponsorships.
This year’s recipients were Ben McIlroy and Nicholas Blackwell.
The sponsorships intend to foster physical activity in young people between 12 and 17 by providing grants of $500 to go towards the costs of involvement in sport or the ‘active’ performing arts.
The sponsorships are not specifically targeted at the elites of any given sport, but rather to support those who expend a significant amount of time, effort and enthusiasm to achieve their best in their chosen endeavour
McIlroy is a well- known local mountain bike racer who won last season’s national under-19 title in Gravity Enduro.
He has been invited to compete in two World Cup rounds this year and plans to use the sponsorship to help prepare for those events in Tasmania and Rotorua, NZ.
Blackwell has been an allrounder as a junior but in recent years has focussed on crosscountry skiing.
He is regularly out roller skiing, running and cycling as well as in the gym 16 hours per week and is aiming to compete in the World Junior Cross-Country Championships for the next few years while still eligible.
He plans to use the sponsorship to purchase a pair of high-tech triac carbon ski poles for racing.
Mt Beauty Medical Centre director, Dr Mark Zagorski said that there had been a large number of young athletes apply again this year, any of whom would have been worthy winners.
KVSSP practice principal, Greg McLennan said that both young men were highly motivated, and wished them a great year in their chosen fields.
The KVSSP/MBMC Young Athlete and Performer sponsorship for 2017- 18 will be seeking applications in October 2017.
