WHILE some of their Myrtleford teammates will have a week off from Albury Wodonga Football Association play, six young Savoy soccer players will head to Shepparton for the Victorian Country Cup this weekend.

Hayden Van der Steeg, Jesse Vardanega (both U15), Liam Macgowan (U14), Summer Caponecchia (U12 girls), and Lachy MacGowan and Zane Vardanega (both U12) have all been picked to play.

The tournament will be held over three days and includes teams from Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca Moama, Geelong, Warrnambool, Shepparton and Sunraysia.

Players in the under 12s and under 14s will line up in three games on both Saturday and Sunday.

The under 12 girls play two games on Saturday and three on Sunday while the under 15s have two matches on each day.

Semi-finals and grand finals for all age groups will be contested on Monday.

Earlier this year five of the six Myrtleford players took part in the branch championships.

Lachy Macgowan and Summer Caponecchia were successful in the Riverina championships at Cootamundra both winning titles with their teams, while Hayden Van der Steeg, Jesse Vardanega and Liam Macgowan played in their respective competitions at Griffith.

At the halfway mark of the season most of Myrtleford’s junior teams are well posi- tioned to make the finals.

The under 12s are currently the best placed side in third.

The under 14s are fifth and the under 11s and under 13 girls are both seventh, while the young and improving under 16s are ninth.
