THE Alpine Shire Relay for Life has been cancelled for 2018 after failing to attract enough participants by June 20.

At the start of June, organisers put a call out for more people to get involved in the Cancer Council fundraiser after just four teams had registered.

But it proved unsuccessful as only three more teams signed up by the cut off and organisers deemed that there weren’t enough participants to go ahead with the event.

What would have been the Alpine Shire’s eighth relay was scheduled to take place at Bright on October 13.

Bright resident and veteran Relay for Life participant Michelle Chalwell said it was a shame the event had to be cancelled.

“It’s really disappointing, it’s such a great event that is well-worth supporting so it’s unfortunate that we didn’t get the numbers,” she said.

Ms Chalwell said some people that had registered for the Alpine Shire event will form a team to participate at Wangaratta’s Relay for Life on October 20.

“Those people already registered can just transfer over to the Wangaratta relay without having to pay the registration fee again,” Ms Chalwell said.

“We hope that quite a few people from the Alpine Shire will join us in Wangaratta.”

October’s overnight event was going to be the first back at Bright since shifting from Pioneer Park to Myrtleford in 2016, as part of an Ovens Valley rotation.

After five years in Bright, the move to Myrtleford rejuvenated the fundraiser after only eight teams took part in relay in 2015.

The first year at Myrtleford saw almost 20 teams and 250 people walking laps at the showgrounds while raising more than $40,000.

However, participation dropped in year two with just short of 100 people turning out during a rain affected event at McNamara Reserve last November.

Since first being held in 2011, the Alpine Shire Relay for Life raised over $264,000 in seven years for Cancer Council Victoria’s cancer research, prevention and support programs.

Local people still interested in participating in a Relay for Life event can register online atlayfor au.
