PEOPLE AROUND TOWN

Alpine Observer - - News - Julie Holm

What do you do?

My husband and I make the wine and manage sales at Ringer Reef winery. Mark’s parents Annie and Bruce started the winery and were getting to the point where they needed some help. Mark and I both have wine making and hospitality backgrounds and have now been here since December 2016.

Where did you move from and what were you doing before?

We moved here from Mildura. Mildura is home and is where both of us have spent most of our lives. We moved around a fair bit when I was growing up but mum and dad returned to Mildura to set up their vineyard while I finished school in Brisbane. The last place I worked was Mildura Arts Centre but before that I worked at Trentham Estate winery in Mildura, McWilliam’s Wines in Griffith and McGuigan Wines in Mildura.

Is the wine industry something you went straight into after school?

I was a bit torn on what I wanted to do when I was in high school. I wanted to study music and I applied to do that but I thought there might have been a bit more stable job prospects in the agricultural sector so that’s the path I took. I studied wine making at Adelaide University.

Mildura’s a pretty hot and dry place have you adapted to the weather here?

Winter is a bit cold for me but the weather the rest of the time is great especially summer which is quite lovely. We never really intended on moving here but now that we have we really like the lifestyle. There’s so much to do, the kids are happy, and the people are fantastic.

What’s your favourite wine?

I’ve got a few favourites depending on the weather. Mark and I are very passionate about our chardonnay and often get into big discussions about how were going to make our chardonnay. I also love sparkling in summer and merlot when its colder.

What do you do in your spare time?

Our spare time is spent with our three kids, bike riding, going for walks or in summer swimming in and tubing down the river. This year we’ve done a bit of cross country skiing which we’re loving. Living at the foot of Mt Buffalo we’re so lucky to have a place like that in our backyard so it’s pretty easy for us to go up for a morning. I also love cooking in my spare time.
