What is your job?
I’m a motor mechanic. I run Mt Beauty Service Centre on the highway. We do services and mechanical repairs – a bit of everything.
Is it something you always wanted
to do? Yes, ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to be a mechanic.
I grew up in Markwood between Wangaratta and Myrtleford. Mum and Dad had a tobacco farm there.
I didn’t want to go into tobacco so when I was 15 I got an apprenticeship with Heffernan Rees in Wangaratta.
I was there for 11 years after the apprenticeship finished.
Then I met Leanne. She was a barber from the Kiewa Valley. We lived for one year in one of the houses on the farm, and in ’93 we moved up here.
We bought the workshop at the service station near the roundabout.
We were there for another 11 years then in 2003 we were offered this place after the go-karts finished. It had a much bigger area. The business expanded and we are very busy.
I have just celebrated 25 years as a mechanic in Mt Beauty.
We had a barbie at the workshop and I invited all of my customers and a lot of them came. It was a really good night. I still have a lot of my original customers from when I first started up.
The celebration was partly to say thanks and how much I appreciate them.
What do you love about the job?
You feel satisfied when you get a car with something wrong with it and you give it back to the customer in good working condition.
Fixing problems gives me real job satisfaction.
What do you do in your spare time?
I was involved with the Mt Beauty Car Club for 30 years, and president for a few years.
My son Cooper is really into motor racing. He started speedway racing at Tawonga when he was 10. I built the cars he raced and now he is racing at Winton. Winton is bitumen and the cars are completely different.
I buy a car and strip it down to a shell and build it up again for racing.
The next round of the Production TTs is on next weekend. He is currently second, 16 points behind the leader, so we reckon he has a chance.
He has done really well over the past 12 months or so.
I am also a member of the Aussie Torana Legends.
It’s a social group and we go on rallies and weekends away. I am also a member of the Mt Beauty fire brigade.
