Participation grows for Alpine Little Athletics
By JUSTIN JENVEY
ALPINE Little Athletics has exceeded its projected participation with a record number of registrations this season.
Nearly 50 kids have signed up for the weekly athletics program which caters for youngsters aged 5 to 15.
The current season got underway on October 12 at Bright’s Pioneer Park after previously being held on the Bright P12 College school oval.
Alpine Little Athletics committee member Kellie Gray said the young athletes and parent helpers are loving being on the town’s main sports ground.
“It’s a much better surface for one but is also a cooler area especially when we run over summer,” she said.
“We have some new ones coming through and have 45 kids registered which is up on last season.
“We recently bought a new high jump mat and will spend another $1500 on additional sports equipment.
“We’ve also earmarked a spot for a long jump pit next to the cricket nets and have approached the Men’s Shed to make us a rack for new hurdles we got last year.”
Gray said club plans to use the main oval until a new recreational space is developed within the Pioneer Park precinct for junior sport.
Meanwhile a group of the club’s youngsters headed to an open day at Albury on the weekend while a team of older athletes recently achieved some strong results in a regional event at Shepparton.
Bryce Fullerton, Tom Gray, Ned Nicholson and Liam Williamson collected silver in the 4x200m relay and were third in the medley relay which consists of two 100m and a 200m and 400m sprint.
Alpine Little Athletics is held on Thursday evenings from 4.45pm.
