ASUS ROG G752VY
All the best things.
Part of the excellent Republic of Gamers (ROG) line, the G752VY is for people who just want to say “Screw it! Give me all the things!” It has abig screen, SSD and hard drive, highend processor, top-end GPU and an industrial design that’s absolutely great for both gaming and work.
The backlit keyboard and silky touchpad are designed for gamers looking for maximum responsiveness. For a laptop, the keyboard is about as close as you can get to a mechanical one. There are special macro buttons.
The 17.3-inch IPS screen supports full HD display, and is driven by Nvidia’s current top-end mobile GPU, the GeForce GTX 980M. Those pushed it to near the top of the performance tables in our 3D tests. All that power requires a good cooling system, and the G752VY can get a little blowy when stressed.
The performance of the PCIe SSD, meanwhile, was straight up bananas. With queue depth switched on, it was achieving sequential reads in excess of 2GB per second. On the more regular tests, it still read at over 1.5GB/sec. The SSD pushed the laptop to extremely high general usage performance as well. The laptop also includes a 1TB hard drive.
All these features come at a cost, in both money and weight. Lugging around this 4.3kg monster and its huge power brick isn’t going to be fun, and it hits just over $3,000 at retail. Its power consumption is considerable, and even its 88Wh battery struggled to match its competitors’ lifespan. But if you want performance that’s as close to a desktop as you can get, that’s the kind of price you have to pay.
