Reroute your travel tech.

In addition to being a portable power bank, 5GHz AC Wi-Fi router and a USB storage device, the MobileLite Wireless G3 also fancies itself as an external SD card reader. While it might sound like the Swiss Army Knife of travel routers, attempting to do too many things can often lead to a lack of performance across the board.

Fortunately, other than the usual underwhelming file transfer and backup software that seem to come with all of these types of devices, the MobileLite Wireless G3 is surprisingly good. The MobileLite Wireless G3 has just one 2A USB 2.0 port that can be used for either charging or as a USB storage expansion, and although the 3,250mAh capacity of its lithium-ion battery is a step down from the 4,000mAh battery of D-Link’s DIR-510L, there’s still more than enough power to give your device a full second wind. Kingston makes little mention of the speed ratings for each of the MobileLite Wireless G3’s 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi frequencies, yet the device managed to provide similar practical speeds as D-Link’s more expensive DIR-510L.

Travelling is when SD card readers become particularly useful, but many of today’s ultraportable laptops and hybrid tablets are too small to have a dedicated SD card reader, so Kingston’s inclusion of one here is a useful bonus.

Although Kingston’s entry-level portable power bank router is slightly bulkier than the DIR-510L, the MobileLite Wireless G3’s reasonable price, decent battery capacity and the additional SD card reader give it an edge against the competition.
