AOC G2770PF

Is it worth saving money with a lower resolution?

-

Not all gamers want a 2K or 4K resolution and are perfectly happy with 1,920 x 1,080, especially with older GPUs. The AOC G2770PF caters for this by bringing FreeSync and other high-end gaming features to a large but still mostly affordable 27-inch 1080p screen.

The monitor uses a flat TN panel, which gives a fast 1ms response time, has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio (80M:1 dynamic) and the usual 170/160-degree viewing angles. But more importantly, the screen runs at up to 144Hz, for ultra-smooth tear free gaming. It’s equipped with FreeSync, which operates from 30Hz to 144Hz, while V-Sync kicks in under 30.

For those used to high res screens, 1080p on a 27-inch model looks a little clunky. But really for many gamers, having a faster framerate and smoother experience (plus savings some purchase dollars) is more important than greater detail. In testing, the colour is decent, the backlight nice and even, and there was no sign of any ghosting, stuttering or lag. A bit of tweaking in the AOC OSD helps the image, but it’s somewhat basic and the interface is frustrating.

On the plus side, the G2770PF has a fantastic stand with height and tilt adjustment. It’s also got a USB 3.0 spec hub, plus HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, D-Sub and some tinny 2W speakers.

The 1080p G2770PF is not a stunning screen, but it has all the bells and whistles of higher-end models, and saves a good $200 over the same size 2K resolution AOC model.
