LG 34UM88C

An ultra-wide gaming experience.

-

While most monitors stick to the tried and true 16:9, more and more are coming out in widescreen 21:9 aspect ratios. The LG 34UM88C has a high 3,440 x 1,440 resolution and IPS panel, but unlike some of the competition, uses a flat LCD. The monitor is also available with a curved screen (the LG 34UC88-B) with otherwise almost identical specs, but a $300 price hike.

While the 34UM88C includes AMD FreeSync for smoother gaming, the refresh rate is an otherwise bog-standard 60Hz. Sure, at the higher resolution mid-range gaming PCs will struggle to break 60fps on some titles, but it still feels a little low. Part of the reason is that the LG is also targeted towards those who want a high-quality image for uses outside of gaming.

Still, the rich colours and wide screen of the 34UM88C make for an immersive experience, but we still miss the curve. Not that we really experienced any tearing or stuttering with it turned off, but FreeSync does make a noticeable difference, and runs from 40Hz to 60Hz.

The monitor also has some other handy features for gamers, such as modes for FPS or RTS gaming, a black stabiliser that lightens dark areas, and a mode to reduce input lag for games that need every last bit of precision. The screen also has quite decent speakers, and handy USB 3.0 quick charging.

The 34UM88C is significantly cheaper than its 34-inch widescreen competition, but then lacks a higher-end refresh rate and a curved panel.
