Plantronics RIG 600

Solid sound and cracking comms.

-

Compared to the choose-your-own earpad function and configurable fit of Plantronics’ 500-series gaming gear, the high fidelity 600 is as basic and minimal as it gets.

This slick-looking headset is crafted from durable matte plastics, skinned in synthetics and neoprene for the contact areas. They’re gentle on the skin and the cans are plush enough to cushion even the knobliest of noodles.

Sonically, the 40mm drivers pack a lot of punch - there’s a load of solid low-end in there and consistent mids, though the highs were a little iffy at times depending on the source. Where the 600 is great is in game and mobile communication; with crystal clear, non-breathy comms resulting from testing over multiple voice apps and mobile.

Touted as isolating and immersive, we actually found the 600 to be anything but, with external noise leaking in, and worse, game sounds and music leaking out like the proverbial sieve.

There are two cables included in the box; one with a built-in boom mic for use with your consoles or PC (there’s a mic/audio splitter cable bundled in too) and another with an in-line mic for taking the 600 on the road with your mobile. While both options feature in-line controls, the latter, frustratingly, doesn’t have a volume toggle — so be prepared to dig into your backpack or pocket when you want to turn that s—t up. One simple design feature we did love was how the cable plugs into the rear of the left can, which keeps it running close to the body and largely tangle-free.
