Linksys X6200 AC750 Wi-Fi VDSL Modem Router

A low-cost VDSL option.

-

Not every VDSL router has to be a $250 powerhouse. For people with modest wireless needs looking for a low-cost solution, Linksys has released the X6200, a compact, simple device designed for basic connectivity.

With only single stream (433Mbps) 802.11ac support and dual-stream 802.11n support (300Mbps), it’s best suited for people who don’t do much video streaming over wireless. 433Mbps is enough for a single device at short range to be streaming HD Netflix for example, but we wouldn’t want to test it with more than one.

It uses the same firmware as nearly all Linksys routers — firmware that’s easy to use and often has surprising depths, but lacks advanced features like VPN support, VLANs and traffic management.

It has schedule-based parental controls and can work with OpenDNS for blacklist blocking. It can be fully managed from Linksys’ revamped mobile apps, which make the initial setup of the modem router a breeze.

It has the conventional four gigabit LAN ports, and it has a hard Ethernet WAN port in addition to its ADSL/ VDSL port, which can come in handy if you find yourself moving to a fixed wireless or FTTH service. It has a single USB 2.0 port for shared storage devices.

Its greatest virtue, however, is its price. If you have a more capable access point/ broadband router or you’re setting up a mesh network and just need VDSL connectivity, this is pretty much the ideal solution. You can switch off the wireless, set it to bridged mode and let it be a ‘dumb’ modem.
