Edimax EW7811DAC

A unique Wi-Fi adapter.

-

Almost all Wi-Fi adapters use an omni-directional antenna, to give excellent performance even when moved around. Not the Edimax EW-7811DAC, though, which uses a special directional antenna for better bandwidth. The unit is USB powered, and offers AC600 spec speeds. In this case, 150Mbps via 2.4GHz, and 433Mbps using the 5GHz band. It also comes with a USB extension cable and cradle, allowing it to be mounted in the best location.

While otherwise fairly normal, the Edimax uses a large flat directional antenna, which gives it an extra dB of gain (on both channels) compared to even a large omnidirectional antenna. The trade-off is that is needs to be aimed directly at your router.

While up close, the Edimax dongle gives similar performance to the competition, at longer range (and with some walls in the way), the directional antenna maintains much higher bandwidth.
