GERMAN PARENTS WARNED THAT CHILD’S TOY IS AN “ILLEGAL ESPIONAGE APPARATUS”. We’ve spoken about My Friend Cayla before in this mag (issue 437, p8 and 438, p12), but rather than a warning along the lines of “You probably shouldn’t buy this”, German parents are now being told to destroy Cayla by the country’s Federal Network Agency. The doll has been classified as an “illegal espionage apparatus” and shops that continue to stock the toy will face fines. IoT-connected Cayla, who suffers from a lack of password, is apparently vulnerable to hackers up to 15m away, giving them the opportunity to listen in directly to the child playing with the toy.
