Cougar Immersa Pro
Is virtual surround sound worth it?
Even cramming multiple drivers into a headset can’t replicate roomscale surround sound, but the virtual alternatives give many of the advantages for a fraction of the cost. The USB-powered Cougar Immersa Pro uses standard 50mm drivers, amd provides immersive audio via the UIX System software.
The available options are quite thorough, including a range of presets, and a full equaliser. The software also allows control over the RGB LEDs in the headset ear cups, including five different effects. In a move we love, the Immersa Pro is modular, separating the USB amplifier and the headset, which uses standard 3.5mm plugs. This means you can use it with other devices, or even use the USB module with another headset. A very intuitive dial on each earcup is used instead of online controls, to adjust volume or mute the mic.
The Immersa Pro uses robust metal rods for strength, with a selfadjusting headband that helps make it very comfortable. Noise isolation and bass are excellent, and while the midrange is warm and full, the highs lack a little clarity. The 7.1 surround sound is well implemented, and gives a roomy feel to gaming, while also providing decent positional audio. The slide out microphone is more than up to the job, but can’t be stuck away as neatly as the competition.
For those who don’t want the 7.1 surround sound, (or a few other features), the trimmed back non Pro version of the Imersa is worth a look at just $60.
