Projects Scarlett and Scarlett Cloud are the company’s newest gaming endeavours.

While we’re sure Scarlet and Scarlett Cloud won’t be the names plastered across the boxes when they appear on shelves, those are said to be the dev titles for Microsoft’s next Xbox hardware devices. Despite the fact that the Xbox One X (previously known as Scorpio) is still fairly new, it appears that Microsoft is already making plans for its future, although no official announcements have been made yet.
Project Scarlett is reportedly the codename for the next major console. In fact, at this year’s E3, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer hinted that the company was working on more than one, stating that “Our hardware team is deep into developing the next generation of Xbox consoles”. When this new hardware is set to land, however, is anyone’s guess; it’s likely to be 2020, when Sony’s PS5 is also predicted to land.
Scarlett Cloud — potentially the second console that Spencer was referring to — could be a game-streaming device and subscription service. This lightweight system would rely on a remote server to provide the processing and graphical power, allowing the user to stream games directly to the TV.
