Project Loon: could balloon-powered internet connect the Australian bush?

It’s really not such a looney idea.

“A network of balloons travelling on the edge of space” is Google’s way of bringing the internet to areas that are offline. The project has partnered with service providers around the world to supplement the existing infrastructure. Not only does this offer connectivity to remote areas, it also sets up networks after a natural disaster. Signals are beamed to the balloons in the stratosphere from existing towers, then passed along the balloon network which is sent where it’s needed. Project Loon has been tested in Australia and New Zealand in the past, although “no balloon-powered internet for Aussies [exists] just yet”.
