Acer VG240Y

This budget IPS monitor claims 1ms response time, but in the real world isn’t all its cracked up to be.

-

24-inch monitors aren’t as glorious as the 49-inch or 34-inchmonsterson the market these days, but for the gamer on a budget who just wants to enjoy some fast paced 1080p gaming, they can still provide a robust gaming experience.Acer’sVG240Y is just the type of monitor for that type of gamer.

For a relatively cheap gaming monitor, it’s interesting Acer went with an IPS panel in the VG240Y. This is partly why the refresh rate tops out at 75Hz, which isn’t awful, but the main benefit of 1080p gaming is the high frames per second you can achieve, but this monitor won’t be of any use if your FPS goes above 75.

Acer claims the VG240Y has a 1ms response time, despite its IPS panel, using what Acer calls “Visual Response Boost” technology. Turn this on in the settings and response times improve, but strobing becomes more apparent. Without VRB, response times are around 10ms, nothing special. Unfortunately, image quality is very average in desktop use, with poor colour gamut and a weird mesh look on the display that’s quite visible on solid bright colours.

For those who just want a simple 1080p 60fps gaming experience on a decent looking monitor on a budget, you probably want to look elsewhere. The Acer VG240Y may be an IPS panel, but image quality isn’t much better than a VA or even a TN panel and lacks the advantages (high contrast or high refresh rates) those panel types provide.
