Huawei CFO facing extradition to US for breaking trade sanctions
Tech company executive at the centre of political hotcake.
Huawei’s chief financial officer and daughter of Ren Zengfei, the company’s founder, Meng Wanzhou is at the centre of political escalations between the US and China after being detained in Vancouver, Canada on December 1st. Wanzhou was awaiting proceedings for an extradition hearing after being accused by the US of attempting to conceal Huawei’s alleged trade dealings with Iran in 2013 from US banks, which caused them to break US and UN trade sanctions. The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yuchenghas threatened Canada with “grave consequences” if it didn’t release Meng immediately. The political conflict comes only months after the US banned Huawei and ZTE devices from the US.
