Gradient recently went low-key viral for its ‘transform into a celebrity’ function – the exact sort of low-grade, basic meme option that’s meant to go viral by comparing you to a celebrity you look nothing like (it’s flattering even considering the possibility of sharing a facial structure with Taika Waititi, after all). There’s a whole app beyond that one mode, though, and it’s a bit of an odd one. This is a basic photo manipulation app that locks some of its functionality behind a ludicrously overpriced premium option, and has some extremely dubious options beyond that. Being able to see what I’d look like as a Simpsons character by giving myself bright yellow skin is fun; being able to darken or lighten my own skin realistically is a more problematic option. Basically, Gradient is a fun photo manipulation app as long as you don’t take it the least bit seriously: please don’t pay an exorbitant weekly fee to remove blemishes from all your photos and give yourself a digital nose job.
