While most text adventures these days take the form of branching narratives where choice is your primary interaction, Mushroom Hunt harkens back to ye old days, offering the player a puzzle challenge that will test their lexicon and powers of observation.

While many text adventures have you thinking on grand terms, as you try to survive in a hostile fantasy realm or attempt to solve a murder mystery, here you’re primed – on your mushroomy quest – to look in bushes, and around trees, and under piles of discarded junk for edible puffballs.

It’s mostly a case of examining or taking things here – the list of useable verbs is actually quite small – so this would be a good gateway game for those wanting to give parser-based interactive fiction a try. Not least because of the attractive ASCII art that accompany each of the environments on screen.

As you find the three required mushrooms – and, perhaps, the many other secret ones – you’ll also uncover scraps of backstory, hints of your own history and that of your grandma and granddad.
