Just as Apple announced it’d be swapping to ARM-based processors for upcoming Mac computers, the world got a new ARM-based supercomputer that is 2.8 times more powerful than the next biggest rig. The new Fujitsu A64FX based Fugaku supercomputer is believed to have cost the RIKEN Centre for Computational Science in excess of US$1Bn and took over six years to design and build. The title for the world’s most powerful computer never lasts long, and Cray Computing is already partnered with AMD to build a 30% more powerful 1.5 exaflop system for the Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
