Intego is designed to stop malware on Macs, and there are two purchase options depending on the scale of protection you’re after. You can purchase Intego’s basic antivirus, Mac Internet Security, by itself, but the entire protection suite – Mac Premium Bundle – also includes a vulnerability scanner, system cleaner, parental controls, and a firewall.
During the test, a compressed file with over 130 malware designed to attack Mac devices was downloaded. Intego blocked 97% of these threats including spyware, worms and Trojans. Five threats were able to sneak in disguised as legitimate Mac programs. However, after a deep virus scan with Intego, these remaining threats were found and immediately quarantined. Overall, Intego does very well in recognising and stopping malware before it infects your computer.
In addition to its VirusBarrier, Intego Premium Bundle comes with Washing Machine, NetBarrier and ContentBarrier. Each contain more security tools to add additional layers of protection around your entire system. You also get Intego’s Personal Backup to create a second set of files to keep safe in your cloud storage account, in case you need to reboot and reinstall important files and programs. The Intego bundle is several separate apps that are downloaded individually. It’s a simple process, but it takes time. You have the option to only install programs you want and disregard others, but overall it’s easier to download one app with all the features and tools rather than several, broken up apps.
Another issue is the lack of safe browsing tools. Unlike other apps that include browser extensions, Intego simply lets you know if your browser’s own security settings are on or off. There are a few other advanced security tools that are not included as well – safe banking tools, password management, and a VPN.
Finally, while Intego recognises and stops Mac threats, it doesn’t work for Windows threats. Windows malware won’t affect your Mac, however it’s easy to accidentally send a Windows threat on through email or instant message.
