GPT-3 bot passed Turing test on Reddit for a week

Bot posted hundreds of responses before anyone caught on.

The next generation of the ‘shockingly good’ text generation bot from OpenAI known as GPT-3 is believed to be the culprit behind a string of long form posts made on Reddit under the alias u/thegentlemetre. The connection was made by software engineer Philip Winston after another Reddit user asked “How does this user post so many large, deep posts so rapidly?” after noticing u/thegentlemetre posted something new every minute. Winston recognised the style from copy written by the initially self censored GPT-2 machine learning text generator and was later contacted by Philosopher AI who claimed ownership of the bot and confirmed it was running that algorithm’s successor GPT-3.
