Robots now beat humans at … curling
Researchers from universities in Korea and Germany have collaborated to create an AI robot named Curly that can reliably beat world class professionals at the notoriously meticulous olympic sport: curling. In addition to having the capabilities of precisely sliding a stone into the right position, Curly is also capable of strategising how to throw in order to knock other teams out of the way. The robot was trained on a digital simulation before finessing its game in the real world. Curly was eventually good enough to beat professional Korean teams in three of four official matches, with the findings documented in Science
Robotics in September.
