Development on Anthem has ceased
The failed GaaS title was previously being revamped.
Despite great launch window sales, Anthem
was a mess upon launch in 2019. It was famed RPG studio BioWare’s attempt to build a Destiny-styled ‘game as a service’ shooter, but it failed to redeem the studio after its equally-disappointing Mass Effect: Andromeda. In 2020, BioWare announced it would relaunch the game as Anthem Next,
which would entail a full scale revamp of the game. But that’s no longer going to happen.
In an announcement last month, BioWare Austin studio director Christian Dailey broke the news, confirming that while Anthem Next won’t be happening, the game’s servers will still operate.
“2020 was a year unlike any other however and while we continue to make progress against all our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we had planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be accomplished without putting undue stress on our teams,” Dailey wrote. ““I know this will be disappointing to the community of Anthem players who have been excited to see the improvements we’ve been working on. It’s also disappointing for the team who were doing brilliant work.”
