Postscript and staff
It is a fact that on more than one occasion I have walked into my office and thought, “We’re not going to make it to lunchtime.” In a small practice, just keeping the doors open is a triumph. For all architects, getting up off the canvas every single time we are knocked down is a testament to our grit and determination as a profession ... and to the patience, endurance and support of our families and loved ones, who inevitably become the collateral damage in the relentless struggle to make architecture. My tiny, precious office continues to endure. I can honestly say that I have never asked for work or hocked myself on the kerb or played the expected game. From our small outpost, we have chosen to stare down the backroom boys and set our own terms. People don’t always like that – it’s an often unpopular and, at times, misunderstood position. That choice has also meant long periods of time spent sitting around waiting for the phone to ring and hoping for a new project.
Putting aside the merit of the work itself, the assessment of which is ultimately for others to make, it is probably fair to say that it is precisely because I have sat around and waited that my colleagues have awarded me this Gold Medal. For that, I am certainly most humble and very grateful.
Hayley Franklin
Hayley joined the office in 1997 as a student and was a permanent member of the team by the time she became a registered architect in 2003. She continues to play a pivotal role in the practice and has been directly involved in the delivery of many successful projects. Her contributions to the broader profession are equally impressive at both state and national level through the Australian Institute of Architects and also at the Architects Registration Board of Victoria, where she is an examiner. Her creativity and professionalism are exceptional, as are her stamina and commitment to producing meaningful architecture – all qualities that are invaluable to the success of my practice.
