What is the IUCN Red List?

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ is recognised as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plant and animal species. Introduced in 1964 and with headquarters in Switzerland, its goal is to identify particular species at risk of extinction and to provide information and analyses on its status, trends and threats – all this in order to spur action for the conservation of these species.
