Every farmer knows that rainfall can be an unreliable source of water for crops. To solve this problem, the farmers of Sumer and China began to dig irrigation canals around 2,400 BC. A series of ditches and gates directed river water out into the fields, resulting in a marked increase in agricultur­al productivi­ty.
