JOSÉ RIZAL (1861–96) was a Filipino poet, writer and activist who was executed at the age of 35 after his writings partially inspired the Philippine Revolution (1896–98), eventually gaining the country independence from Spanish rule. He is considered one of the country’s national heroes.
