JOSÉ RIZAL (1861–96) was a Filipino poet, writer and activist who was executed at the age of 35 after his writings partially inspired the Philippine Revolution (1896–98), eventually gaining the country independen­ce from Spanish rule. He is considered one of the country’s national heroes.
